Hi
I formatted a group of cells to Number-->Fraction. The entered 1/2, 1/3, 10/12 and I got these number 1/2,1/3, and 5/6 in the right hand side of these cells (so far so good) but when i typed 10/11 or 11/12 , I got 1 in the middle of the cell? Why is that? Thank you.

Excel Facts

Will the fill handle fill 1, 2, 3?
Yes! Type 1 in a cell. Hold down Ctrl while you drag the fill handle.
Select the cell, then go to format - custom and click the # ??/?? option, does that sort it out?

Other option is when you clicked the fractions choosing the "up to 2 digits" or "up to 3 digits" options

Thank you all. What does "up to two digits" mean here? and why 1 in the middle of the cell?
I have a feeling that because 10/11 is close to 1 then excel put 1 but why in the middle of the cell? Thank you again for your help and reply. I appreciate it

Because it rounds up because you had it set to to 1 digit option.

Because to display as a fraction it needs special formatting because it isn't displaying as a regular number.
Type the whole number 1 in a cell and in another cell type 1.5 and format as a fraction and see how they display.

Should have said...
Type the whole number 1 in a cell and in another cell type 1.5 and format as a fraction with 1 digit and see how they display.

After that format the cells as 2 digits and see where the whole number part displays.
