Formulas without importing data

I've come across several MS sites that say you can write formulas in Excel for external data (stored in Access in my case) without importing the data. Unfortunately, they don't say how you do this. Any advice?

It's the 7th bullet point and here is what it says excatly

"Connect to external data and view, query, and edit it without having to import"

I think that's referring to MSQuery (Data|Get External Data), not formulas.

So there is no way for me to run a SUMIFS function on data without importing it into Excel?

Not unless the data is in Excel.
