Formulas Disappearing After Every Save

I have office 365, not that I wanted it. I was content with the old software that used the .xls extension. I've continued using .xls with excel 365, but it suddenly appears that when I save a file with formulas, the formulas are converted to hard values (no more formulas). Here is the warning given if I continue to save with the .xls extension: "One of more external references have file paths that are longer than 218 characters, These references will be removed." Location: (a worksheet in the same workbook). There is a link provided to click to show the formulas being addressed. I have not added anything, such as apps to Windows. to The formulas will not be converted to hard values if I use the .xlsx extension.
