Formulas Calculation Options

So in a spreadsheet that we have to continuously update that my colleague just handed over to me, I just discovered that the Formulas Calculation Option was changed from Automatic to Manual. I would like to know if there are any instances that such switching can occur on its own without someone actually activating it.
Many thanks.

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
Generally, the calculation option is determined by the first Excel file or by the current calculation option, if you open multiple Excel files in the same Excel instance.

Also, a misbehaved macro might disable automatic calculatlon and fail to reinstate it.

If the Excel file is subsequently saved, you might permanently change the calculation option of the file.

Thanks, Joeu2004. I now know it's actually possible for the calculation option to change under certain circumstance without direct human interface.
Thanks again.
