formulas are being automatically 'rem out

while working on someone's workbook, i im finding the when i make changes to a formula and hit enter it automatically adds the ' before the = anf i have trouble just deleting it i have to use format painter to clear the cell in even then it still gives me issues

any idea why this is happening?

Pressing F4 adds dollar signs when editing a formula. When not editing, F4 repeats last command.
If it's what I think you are saying, they're not being commented out, they're being coerced to text. You can type an apostrophe into the beginning of any cell and that will happen and the character will not show in the cell, but will, IIRC, show in the formula bar.

Check that no cells referenced in the formula are formatted as text; should be formatted as number. If that doesn't solve it, make sure automatic calculation is enabled and 'show formulas' option is not enabled. Not sure of the required cell format of the cell that contains the formula but I suspect it is "General". You may have to manually remove the ' character in the formula bar after doing any of these things. If there are too many, a vba procedure probably could fix it that way if necessary.

Solution
I reopened the file and selected all and changed to number.

made several changes in the existing formulas and that seemed to work

it kept changing =if to '=if and so on and so on

not it appears to be leaving my changes alone.
