:warning:I have a document for school and it has some Protection on it. Which is fine... the problem is that when I open this document on MY Macbook it doesn't work as it should.

Example:
It is made so if I enter the WRONG answer in a specific cell, the cell next to it will show a *

But if I enter the CORRECT answer in that cell, the cell next to it will stay blank

Problem:
No matter what I enter in that cell, as soon as I hit ENTER the cell next to it shows #REF!

I open the same exact document from the same exact website location on other Macbooks and PCs and it works fine on all of those, just not on mine

I am using a Macbook Pro with OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5 on it
Excel version is 15.15 (151008)

I have tried the following:
  • Updated Excel
  • Changed it from Automatic Calculation, to Manual Calculation and then changed it back
  • Checked and unchecked the FORMULAS box under View
  • Saved it as a Macro-Enabled workbook:confused:

I honestly have no idea what else I can try

Last used cell?
Press Ctrl+End to move to what Excel thinks is the last used cell.
Welcome to the Board!

What is the exact formula is this cell?

Hi there!! Thank you for the welcome! :)

So the column housing the formula is password-protected as it is a homework excel document

Is there a way I can get around this protection to get the formula to you?

I do know that when I first open the document I get the options to "Edit Links" "Update" or "Ignore Links"
When I select EDIT LINKS it shows the source file as /Users/MyUsername/Downloads/C:\Users\TeachersUsername\AppData\Local\Temp\7zOCE57.tmp\filename.xlsx

Is that odd or normal??

I suspected that the issue may be with linked cells.
What you describe is what one typically sees when one is unable to link to the file referenced.
Are you able to open up the file in the past you listed above?
If not, that is your problem.

I wanted to point out that this Excel sheet works on a Macbook with Excel 2011 but not on a Macbook with Excel 2016

On the same computer?

Did you confirm that you were able to open the "linked" file directly, using the path you posted in post #3?

Also they both have a Macbook Pro on OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 but HER Macbook is Early 2011 and HIS is Early 2015

Here is the formula -- looks like it is pointing to a local file on the instructors computer

=IF('C:\Users\KGORAN~1\AppData\Local\Temp\7zOCE57.tmp\[WRD 26e_PR 20-3A_Sol.xlsx]Sol'!$C$5="OFF","",IF(I22=""," ",IF(AND(I22<>"",I22<>'C:\Users\KGORAN~1\AppData\Local\Temp\7zOCE57.tmp\[WRD 26e_PR 20-3A_Sol.xlsx]Sol'!I22),"*"," ")))

I cannot open the linked file as it references the instructor's computer path
If you cannot reference that file, then the formula with the link is not going to be able to reference it either, hence the #REF error.

I am not sure in the Macbook version has the option to remember the last saved value, and not return the error. But I would think then you would have to have it set to NOT update the links or recalculate.

Here is old article on links. Even though it isn't specific to the version you are on, some of the same logic should follow. Note that how it talks about how it might behave different if opened from a version of Excel other than the one it was created on.
