Hi,

I've tried the following formulas to average a set of numbers if the corresponding date cell in another column's year equals 2001. All four formulas work on a small subset of the original but when I apply it to the whole some of them don't work and can give me wildly different results.

There are only two columns but about 1000 rows of data. Column A is dates Column B is percentage.

These are the formulas I've tried and all have worked on this data:

<TABLE style="WIDTH: 104pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=139><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 56pt; mso-width-source: userset; mso-width-alt: 2742" width=75><COL style="WIDTH: 48pt" width=64><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: #f0f0f0; formulas:
=SUM(B2:B13)/12

=SUMPRODUCT(--(YEAR(A2:A13)=2001),B2:B13)/SUMPRODUCT(--(YEAR(A2:A13)=2001))

=SUM(IF(YEAR(A2:A13=2001),B2:B13))/12

Again all the formulas work on this but when I try to apply the same formulas for an expanded range (A3:A999 and B3:B999) the last two formulas will give me these results:
<TABLE style="WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=64><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 48pt" width=64><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: #f0f0f0; BORDER-LEFT: #f0f0f0; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; WIDTH: 48pt; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: #f0f0f0; BORDER-RIGHT: #f0f0f0" class=xl63 height=20 width=64 align=right>73.226%</TD></TR><TR style="HEIGHT: 15pt" height=20><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: #f0f0f0; BORDER-LEFT: #f0f0f0; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent; HEIGHT: 15pt; BORDER-TOP: #f0f0f0; BORDER-RIGHT: #f0f0f0" class=xl63 height=20 align=right>0.881%</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I'm just hoping to clarify why this is occuring.

Wish I could post the book...it's driving me crazy because the formulas work....

Any geniuses out there are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The formulas are not well-formed... Try:

=SUM(IF(YEAR(A2:A13)=2001,B2:B13))/12

=AVERAGE(IF(YEAR(A2:A13)=2001,B2:B13))

each of which must be confirmed with control+shift+enter, not just enter.

Thank you Aladin!

For anyone else skimming this: I had a parentheses that started at the end of "year" and should have ended after the range not the year I was looking for. AND it need to be arrayed.

{=AVERAGE(IF(YEAR(A3:A999)=2001,B3:B999))}

THANKS
