formula qestion

I need help understanding how this formula works =SUBTOTAL(9,C2:C187
This is used for payroll, the sheet has employees with hours worked over a two week period. I have totaled the hours by employee in a separate column and it does not equal the total in C.
Any help will be appreciated!
 

Excel Facts

Can you AutoAverage in Excel?
There is a drop-down next to the AutoSum symbol. Open the drop-down to choose AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, or MIN
THe Subtotal function operator number 9 in the formula simply tells the function to sum the range C2:C187
IT WON'T include any other SUBTOTALS that fall within that range
