Formula problems

I have a spreadsheet with formulas in certain cells - for example in B2 I have =IF(A2="","",(B1)) but if I enter a date in A2 nothing appears in B2 unless I select B2 and click the fx button and okay the box that appears. I did read to check that I hadn't selected Text for these cells but I haven't. So I'm not too sure what I'm doing wrong and any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Go to the Formulas tab and make sure that for Calculation Options you have Automatic checked.

Sounds like you may have your Calculation Mode set to Manual. If you press the F9 key (which is a Manual Recalc), does it work?
If so, then go into your settings and change your Calculation Mode to Automatic.
