Hi all,

Need a little help with formulas.

I have fifty departments (A1 - A50). I have the total people in each department in B1 - B50. I'm having a hard time making a formula where the value in C1 - C50 is returned based on column B numbers/ people and the following:

0-50 people return a "1" in C1 - C50.
51-150 people return a "2" in C1 - C50.
151-250 people return a "3" in C1 - C50.

We'd be grateful if someone could help us out of a jam.

Thanks,
Steve

Excel Facts

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
Assuming you have no headers

in c1

=IF(B1>150,"3",IF(B1>50,"2","1"))
I've assumed anything over 150 people will return a 3 -Ie 300 people will still be 3

Hi, if it's really just 1,2 and 3 you want to return you can try:

=MATCH(B1,{0,51,151})

Note, this will return 3 for numbers greater than 250.

in C1, put

=if(B1<51,1,if(B1<151,2,if(B1<251,3,"?")))

and copy down
