I have a column that is closing date for deals, example 30-Oct-09. I need a column beside it that converts that to either a number for the month (10 for October) or simply enters the actual Month. I want to be able to sort all deals by month instead of yr.

Excel Facts

Save Often
If you start asking yourself if now is a good time to save your Excel workbook, the answer is Yes
=month(cell#) will return the number of month
or
=CHOOSE(MONTH(E2), "Jan", "Feb", "Mar", "Apr", "May", "Jun", "Jul", "Aug", "Sep", "Oct", "Nov", "Dec") will give you the name of the month, which I prefer.

Eventually try a Pivot Table and group dates by months ( assuming you have real dates not text looking like dates)

You like that formula better than the one oldbrewer gave in Message #2 ?
