Formatting Negative Percentages

I know there is probably a simple explanation, but I'm missing it somewhere along the way - I am trying to format some cells that contain percentages to show in a parenthesis instead of with the negative symbol: (9.99%) instead of -9.99%. I've even tried custom formatting, but haven't been able to get that to work, so I must not be getting the custom formatting correct. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
