Force Excel not to make calculation

Hi,
I have a large Excel with a lot of data that requires a lot of calculation.
The issue is that I can't even open it without freezing and have an message Excel not responding.
Is there a way for me to open Excel without really open it to switch from auto calculation to manual calculation ?

Opening a file in excel without recalculating NOW()

In excel 2010, 2011, and 2013 (tried all three) opening a file as read-only still recalculates NOW(). Is there a way to instruct excel not to recalculate when opening a file?

you should be able to open excel using the icon so it just opens a new
then change the settings to Manual calculation and now you should be able to open the file , but using OPEN
I dont have windows now - but it used to be
