I prefer to see all the files within a folder in the "List" format. But everytime I open a new fodler or install some new software, everything shows up as icons. Its not a huge deal, but is a little aggrevating.

Is there any way to change to list on every file/folder within Windows?

Yes, it might be slightly different with whatever version of Windows you use, but in Windows 2000/NT:

1) setup the view you want it to be for every time you open the file browser
2) On the menu, choose TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS
3) click the VIEW tab
4) On the VIEW tab, click LIKE CURRENT FOLDER and click OK

Now every time you open the file browser it should be set the way you like it.

I'm doing this on Windows 2000 at the moment, so this may not be accurate for you (seeing as you did not mention what version of Windows you're using):

  • Open any folder
  • Set view to "List"
  • Select "Folder Options" from the Tools menu of the open folder (or go to the Control Panel and select Folder Options (or, just open any folder and select Folder Options from the Tools menu.)
  • Select the "View" tab
  • Under the heading "Folder Views" at the top, click the button that says "Like Current Folder."
  • Click OK.
