Finding values that don't have the right # of characters

I am working with a spreadsheet (received from an external source) where all values should have 9 characters. I want to highlight the cells where the values are fewer than 9 characters.

Is there an IF/THEN or some sort of function that I can use to highlight? It is a very large spreadsheet, so sorting from MIN to MAX won't work because of the number of cells.

Thanks

Excel Facts

Create a chart in one keystroke
Select the data and press Alt+F1 to insert a default chart. You can change the default chart to any chart type
You can do that with conditional formatting.

Select the data > Conditional formatting > New rule > Use a formula >
=LEN(A1)<9
select your format > OK

Change A1 if need to match the first cell in the range you selected.
