Filter data in a form

I have a form in which I have two combo boxes to retrieve data from a Subform. I want to add a filter in which only certain records are retrieved. I've tried using the criteria line in a query but it doesn't filter the records. My form is a racing stat form in which I use a combo box to retrieve a driver's name and another combo box to retrieve a year. The Subform then displays that driver's results for that particular year. I wanted to filter just a driver's certain finish or start position, without using the Advanced/Lookup filter. Is there a way around this?
