Executing SQL Query found in worksheet cell

I use Excel to quickly create sql statements, and now I'm wondering how I can have them execute and drop the returned results in another cell. I can create the data connection, but when I set the command type to SQL it appears that I cannot simply reference a series of cells as the source of the queries. Is this possible?
