Hey!

I'm being asked at work to steer away from excel and use project. My argument is that anything project can do, excel can do better. I don't see any reason to change if your proficient with excel.

Agree? Disagree?

Project and Excel are completely different applications.

I've worked with both.

I suppose you could say that anything you can do in one you can do in the other but that really depends on masochistic you are.

I honestly wouldn't contemplate trying to recreate some of the functionality that's available in Project in Excel and vice versa.

What is it you are currently doing in Excel that Project can't do?

I realise calculation is perhaps not Project's forte but that's not what it's meant for.

In the past I've happily used both side by side. eg exporting data from Project to Excel for calculations.

Welcome to the Board!

I agree with Norie. While you can recreate some of Project's functionality in Excel, the only time I've ever had a need is when other users didn't have it. Excel certainly won't handle large, complex projects as well and will be primarily limited to small tasks.

If your company has Project accessible (many don't) then I'd go towards it. There's no point in wasting your time (or your employer's) trying to recreate something that's had years of development effort put into it and works fine.

Thanks for your answers!

I guess i'll have to bite the bullet and start using Project, maybe I'm just Excel biased. Do you know of any Excelisfun equivilents on you tube or good online visual training rescources.

I'm hoping Project is easy to pick up though.

Thanks again!

Good for you. Project isn't that tough on the surface, but like most programs it does have multiple levels that take some getting used to...I'm not sure of a similar forum to this one, but I'm sure a Google search will turn something up. And there's always the new-ish Microsoft forums you can try.

I agree with Smitty, Project isn't difficult - I think it's one of these applications that for some reason a mystique builds up around it.

Perhaps because it's not readily available and costs a fortune.

I think the only reason I ended up with access to it was because my priveleges had a distinct similarility to the bosses.:)
