Excel vs. Access: Round III

I am an Excel person, with basically no experience in Access.
My boss is the opposite. Any ideas for data storage/analysis that I have, he always says, "you don't need Excel for that, Access is the better choice."
I know it's a broad topic, and that the choice depends on the application, but if you had to hit the most important points and answer the following question in only 3 or 4 sentences, what would your response be?
"What can Excel do that Access can not?"

According to my boss, Access is almost always the "right" choice (which is hard to hear, because i've spent the past few years working exlusively in Excel).

Thanks for the help on a very broad and perhaps difficult topic.

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.
We seem to have this discussion every few months. If you search this forum, you should be able to find a few of the threads. Here is one:

Thanks JM14, that link cleared things up quite a bit. I liked your series of questions. I think i'm in the same "fearing access" stage that you were in. At any rate, I bought the 2003 Access Bible, and am already quite familiar with VBA in Excel, so hopefully that combination will get me where I need to be.

Mike,

Glad to hear it! I was in the same boat as you a few years ago (loved Excel, knew very little about Access). Access can seem a little daunting at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is very powerful. I am at the point now where I don't have a preference of one over the other, and just use the one that I think will handle the problem the best.

Good luck with your boss! He sounds a bit close-minded. There are no absolutes. Access may be a better for a lot of things, but you can't say that it will always be better for everything.

Along the way of learning Access, feel free to post your Access questions on the Access forum of this board.
