Excel VBA Training

Just curious if anyone ahs ever taken VBA training class and whether or not you'd recommend it.

The new employer is looking for some Excel VBA trainign for a small number of employees and looking for training centers (around Philadelphia if it matters). I'm not classically trained and I think much of what they are looking for will be related to auotmating tasks with Essbase but also some more complicated file processing in Excel outside Essbase.

I'm good with the normal everyday stuff, but curious if anyone has taken any outside training. They'd strongly prefer to go to a training place (Learning Tree, Lincoln Tech, etc) rahter than bringing someone in on-site.

Any recommendations/feedback on any training you've taken?

If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
I took a VBA training class some years ago. It was a good introduction into VBA to get me started, and I just kind of ran from there. So it was good to get some base knowledge and get me going in the right direction. But it by no means was enough to start doing all the tasks I needed to at work.

If they are looking to use it for a particular task, it might be best to bring in someone if they can tailor their training to your particular needs (and you should get more "bang for the buck").

I guess one advantage to having it off-site is less work-related distractions.

Upon some advice from another forum member, I picked up Excel 2007 VBA Programming for Dummies to get me started and am already halfway through (I only got it Thursday)! I've also applied for some VBA courses at a local training centre to help me get my head around it.

I've found looking around on here very helpful as well, I regularly read an OP's problem and read the macro posted in response and pick it apart to try and see how it works :)

Depending on how you learn best is whether it's worth it or not, luckily the courses I have applied for you provide you with a booklet so I can always refer back if needed :biggrin:

Mr Excel has a Live Lessons QUE product that is a DVD and small course companion. Excel VBA and Macros with Mr Excel is its title. You could use it as a refresher and your coworkers could use it as an introduction. I use mine at home and at work as a reference as well as a course. Its $50 bucks and he has a Power Excel companion Live Lessons DVD for $40. You could probably order them right off of this web site in his Online Store.

He also has continuing professional education classes at least twice a year at the University of Akron. I attended those in 2007. It was less than $200 and you get his VBA book included plus a few freebees. In total the value of his book and freebees equals the price of the class. There were people from many states coming in for this one. CAK is the local Canton Akron Airport and CLE is the Cleveland Hopkins airport.

BUT!!!!!!! if you bring him in-house to your place of work he starts off the class by having each attendee present him with a problem at work that if only they could automate it, their lives would be so much easier. By the end of the class he will show you how VBA code could solve them or put you on the right track to solve them. It would be some amazingly productive training if he's on your site and can see 1st hand what your class' automation opportunities are.

Check his present list of seminars for the Analysts Boot Camp. I never attended one but it sounds great. He teaches it along with the co-author of his Pivot Table Data Crunching Book. They have held it in Chicago and Dallas. It runs a week and I recall that Excel VBA was on the syllabus. Good Luck
