Hi,

Currently I need to constantly search for references from Excel to my Outlook manually to check on their status, which is time consuming.

Is there a way for Excel to update (change cell colour) when I receive an email containing a corresponding reference? E.G. When I receive an email with ABC-1 in the subject line, the row in excel containing ABC-1 updates to red.

I can't say exactly but, you could have a Macro/Event in Outlook that updates the Workbook. Problems could occur depending on multiuse abilities in case the WorkBook is already open.
Alternatively, you might be able to use the PowerQuery functions in Excel to update the file. Querying your Outlook is possible but may be slow because of the size of data of the Outlook db.
Lastly, depending on your MS365 subscription, you may have access to the PowerAutomate tools. This would be license dependent to use. It may also be better to use the on-line lists.

From within Outlook, it sounds like you are tracking task assigned to other users/people. If that is the case, create a Task and Assign it. When the Assigned User updates the Status of the Task, it will update in your outlook.
