I have multiple formulas in my template and is very slow - even to open the file. When selecting shift it seems to take forever to display?
How can I fix this? I dont appear to have any external links that I can see and all reference look up tables within the same spreadsheet.

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
There are a number of things that could cause this.
One suggestion is to turn off automatic calculation (on formulas tab).
Another thing could be that you have many cells with Volatile functions that recalculate with every update and when you open the workbook.
Some of the volatile functions are: Now(), Today(), Offset(), Rand(), Randarray(). if you have many of those then ALL of those are recalculating and if there are dependencies on dependencies then there is a lot of recalculation.

How big is the file ?
If you press CTRL + End on each sheet where does the cursor go to?
If it's waaay down the sheet and these cells are filled with formulas, as suggested by @awoohaw, then that will slow the sheet / s considerably.
If you would like to upload your workbook to a hosting site, DropBox for instance, then post a link to that file back here for us to take a look.
AND
Can you please update your profile to show us what version of EXcel you are using.
