Hi

had a few theoretical questions
use excel a lot especially as a dbase (I should maybe use access and link them - no quite sure how just yet but will search this site)

4 computers all share the same main large file on the 'server'
when we open the 'main file' am I using my computer's ram and processor or the 'servers'
how could I speed up the opening and saving of this file given that it is almost 22 mb

thanks a lot question has been on my mind for some time now

Excel Facts

Which Excel functions can ignore hidden rows?
The SUBTOTAL and AGGREGATE functions ignore hidden rows. AGGREGATE can also exclude error cells and more.
Assuming you are opening the file from Excel on your machine, then you are using your machines resources, the server is just acting as disk essentially.

Hello,

If you have file which is 22mb and it is just in table formats
i.e. Headers/Data down the rows on sheets

Then it would make a lot more sense to store it in a Database as they are designed to efficiently work with this type of data.
Also, you might not need all of the data so you can Query it at the Database source and import it.
Then you would have less data in memory in Excel.

If you need the 'How to' for importing just ask.

thnaks to you both
the data is a realtional, its used to make orders and generate forms
we never know whcihof the 5000 prodcuts will be ordered
i thought if i could keep the info in access and only update when needed i could get rid of a big sheet in the workbook and make it open, close and save faster
i guess the other option is to keep that sheet in another workbook and ink the two

thx again
