Excel Scatter Plot Problem: Date/Time on x-axis

I have dates (column A), times (Column B), and a dependent variable (Column C) in a straightforward arrangement in Excel 2007.

I select both column A and B for the x-axis and in the Data Select window and Excel appears to understand that these columns are the collective x-axis.

But on the chart itself the labels are ordinal numbers beginning with zero. I cannot seem to get the axis labels to reflect the date/time series correctly.

I am beginning to think this is a problem in Excel 2007.

Does anyone have experience with this problem?

Excel Facts

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
I have the exact same issue. My tabular dates run from Mar-11 to Oct-11, with values against each month.

My Scatter chart shows dates ranging from Jan-11 to Nov-11, with no consistency in the conguity of dates:

Jan-11 Feb-11 Apr-11 Jun-11 Jul-11 Sep-11 Nov-11

So Mar-11, May-11, Aug-11 and Oct-11 are all missing, yet the gaps between markers is consistent. Excel seems to have just converted my dates into an arbitrary range, with a random selection of labels.

Utterly useless.

Excel 2003 does exactly the same thing.

It works fine as a line graph, but then you can't put a dynamic vertical line in for today's date.

I'm really hoping that someone can tell me which particular voodoo incantation is required to make Excel do what any sane person would expect it to....
