Excel randomly freezes

Hello,
I am having a problem with Excel for 8 months now where a file randomly freezes and the ribbon will be greyed out. Solution is to click on another file and then go back to that file but as soon as I type in a cell and click enter it happens again. It does not matter which file I use or if I am online or not. I could go days with no issues and then it just happens. I have also disabled all add-ins. I am running Windows 7 and Office365. My PC has been re-imaged twice and Office re-installed but that didn't help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Excel Facts

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
Are you working with very large files that contain a hefty amount of calculations? If so, it could be the calculations which are locking it up.
Another thing which may be causing this is Excel's AutoSave feature. Try disabling it to see if that clears up the issue. You can find this option under File>Options>Save>"Save AutoRecover Information every x minutes"

Thanks Mr.Kowz!
I wondered the same because some of the files are large (up to 10m) but they are the same files that my co-workers are using and no one else is having the problem. I will try the auto-save feature. Will let you know.

Another thing to consider, not all computers are equal (unless your company is really good about keeping things up to date). Your processor, RAM, and (more importantly) available RAM have a huge effect on overall computer performance. Once you start opening large Excel files, RAM can quickly go crazy. There is one file I open which is 60mb and takes up over a gig of RAM (trust me, I wish I could recode the entire thing... ;)). Do you know what processor you have and how much RAM your computer has; and is your processor/RAM comparable to coworkers' devices?

Another thing is that you mention you've had it reimaged a few times; depending on the age of the computer and if you are experiencing other issues, it's entirely possible that the HDD is failing. A failing HDD takes longer to write to since the program has to look for non-corrupted sectors.

Yet another thing (sorry, I'm thinking as I go) -- is the file being opened across a network share? If so, try downloading it locally to your device and see if you experience the locking up.

I have 8GB of RAM and the CPU is i5-5300U (2.3GHz) which is the same as most of my coworkers. The PC is just under 2 years old and only 16 months old when the problem started. The files that I am using are on my hard drive but Mydocuments is constantly replicated to servers. But the problem happens when off line and again same setup as my coworkers with no problems.
