I have this project that I'm doing for a college class that has me looking around the net for answers to some common excel and access questions. I don't use Excel or Access that much but that's not the point. The point is to try and find the answers. I've found some answers but I still need help with some. Please help! Some of these the person wasn't specific on whether or not it's an Excel or Access question -

1. I get an error message when I try to paste records in a datasheet. What’s going on?

2. I can’t enter dates the way I want in input mask. Can you help? If I change data in a query does it change the corresponding tables, if not how can I do this. If so, can this feature be turned off?

Excel Facts

Convert text numbers to real numbers
Select a column containing text numbers. Press Alt+D E F to quickly convert text to numbers. Faster than "Convert to Number"
Dude, you got to be more specific. What type of "records"? What's the error message? What kind of data is it? Is this homework that YOU'RE supposed to be doing? I'm looking for some clues here...

These are just random questions given to me by other students in the class. The questions I posted are the exact questions given to me. You can see why I had trouble finding the answers on the net because the questions are so vague. The point of the project is to find the answers any way possible including the internet, help menus, asking someone etc.

First let's start withe error message. Do you know what the error message said? Can you find out?

Edit: Sometimes you can get an error message when pasting data because the range doesn't match. I find this to be the most common copy/paste error.

What I posted is all the information I have to work with. Here is what I just found for that particular question -

If you're copying or moving records from another application, be sure the data is arranged in a spreadsheet or table, or separated by tab characters, before you select it. If the source datasheet has more fields than the destination datasheet, Microsoft Access doesn't paste the extra fields, which could be leading to your error message.

Yes, and its the same case with Excel. By the way, this IS an Excel forum. There is an Access board here but most people here are EXCELERS. You'll probably have a hard time getting Access questions answered here.

Post more questions if you got 'em, though.

As for your second question above, I have no idea what an input mask is, but I'm sure someone here does.

I wish you luck! :)

Hope you found somebody with more knowledge so you can compare these answers:
I think both questions have to do with Access.

1. I get an error message when I try to paste records in a datasheet. What’s going on?

you get errors in access for pasting numeric values in text records, or viceversa, for pasting more data than allowed in a field, for pasting more fields than record has,... (the list is huge!!!) Access always create an "Errors Table" to show the data it can't paste.

2. I can’t enter dates the way I want in input mask. Can you help? If I change data in a query does it change the corresponding tables, if not how can I do this. If so, can this feature be turned off?

when you select your type of field, it has to have a predefined format, and date formats are a few. this is called the "input mask" and cannot be modified at data-input time.
The second part, Query: Only an "update query" (I don't know how it's name is in english) can modify records. You cannot modify a query at execution-time but you can change behavior in design-mode.

I apologize to all excelers here, but this is all about help, it isn't?
