Microsoft Excel Tutorial: A new Check Performance Feature debuts in Excel to clean excess cell formatting that can cause large file sizes.

Welcome to episode 2632 of MrExcel's Net Cast! In this video, we'll be discussing a new feature in the Windows version of Excel that has been available in Excel online for some time now. It's called Check Performance and it can help you clean up unwanted cell formats and reduce file sizes. This feature can be found on the Review tab and is definitely worth checking out for any workbook that you've been using for years.

Now, before you go ahead and click "optimize all", it's important to take a look at what Check Performance has found. It looks for excess formatting, unused cell styles, and unneeded metadata that can slow down your workbook. While it may be tempting to get rid of everything, it's important to be cautious as there may be some formatting that you actually want to keep. For example, if you have a tooltip cell or if you're using pixel art, Check Performance may not be able to detect it and could potentially delete it. However, the good news is that the undo button can bring back any unintentionally deleted formatting.

In this video, we'll also be discussing a potential issue with Check Performance that was discovered while filming. It seems that in some cases, the feature may not work perfectly and could potentially delete intentional formatting. So, while it can be a useful tool for cleaning up excess styles and formats, it's important to be careful and double check before using it. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them down below and don't forget to like, subscribe, and ring the bell for more helpful Excel tips and tricks. Thank you for watching and we'll see you in the next episode of MrExcel's Net Cast!

Oh hey.
A new feature just debuted in the Windows version of Excel.
It's been in Excel online for a while.
It's back on the Review tab called Check Performance.
Get rid of Extra Cell Formats and save on file sizes.
So it's back here on the Review tab. Any workbook that you have that you've been using for years, it's worth opening it up just to find what they find.
It looks for excess formatting, unused cell styles, unneeded metadata that can slow your workbook down.
Now it's very tempting to come here and just click optimize all, but it's really worth it to take a look and see what they found.
These are some cells that have just gotten various formats over time, but there are some things that actually belong here that they detect.
In the recent podcast where I talked about adding a tool tip.
That tool tip cell is there and they're offering to get rid of text properties, fill color and cell border.
If I would do that, the tooltip stays, that's good, but I lost the cell formatting.
Or if you're a person that does pixel art.
They even say in the Help for this that they can't detect when pixel art are being used.
And they're going to destroy your pixel art because they just can't tell that it's pixel art.
The nice thing is that undo will bring that back.
Alright, so check this out on the review tab.
Check performance, just a great way if you have a worksheet that's slowing down because of a lot of excess styles, formats and things like that.
I was about to thank you for stopping by and I just noticed that they had a problem here with this row height.
Well, I actually did put that row height in order to get everything to fit on the screen, so again, be careful.
It's going to be useful in a lot of cases unless you are doing something clever and might not see that there's a particular reason for you to have done something.
See undo works but okay, shoot, it's not perfect.
The row height was too high.
They offered to get rid of it.
It moved these three images into the wrong spot.
Move but don't size with cells.
I pressed undo and it didn't move them back.
There're going to be spreadsheets with thousands of these cells and this will be very useful.
Just be careful before you start using it in case there was something intentional that it might break.
Well, I want to thank you for stopping by.
We'll see you next time for another Net Cast from MrExcel.
