Excel help on testing an inventory

I have an inventory of 550 emergency exit lights that must be tested every month. I'm finding my testers are not actually testing the lights but just checking them off on a printed spreadsheet. I want to install barcode stickers on the lights so they have to go to each light to verify operation. My plan is:
1) Install barcode stickers on every light.
2) Create the database of all lights. The database with include a column of barcode numbers, a column for the location of each light and two columns for each month (one for the date & time scanned and another for test results (pass or fail)).

This is where I need help.

3) When the tech scans a light barcode, I need it to go to the row for that light , automatically enter time/date and move one cell to the right so the tech can enter 'pass or fail'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
