I would like to import the account number into cell B2 when a selection is made for an expense category in cell A2 from a dropdown menu.

Expense CategoryAccount
Contracts - General

The dropdown menu in cell A2, uses data validation from a table in a separate tab "selection lists". The data validation range for the dropdown menu in Column B.
The account number to be imported is in Column C

Can you sort left to right?
To sort left-to-right, use the Sort dialog box. Click Options. Choose "Sort left to right"
try
=index('Selection lists'!C2:C10000,match(A2,'Selection lists'!B2:B10000,0))

A lookup that looks up the value from the dropdown and then looks in the dropdown list sheet and returns the value in same row in column c

Change the range to match your list in 'Selection lists' sheet
