On Monday I posted a query about getting Excel to talk to an external interface connected to the USB - see http://www.mrexcel.com/board2/viewtopic.php?t=264511.

Although it has had 14 viewings :) so far there have been no replies :-( .

This got me thinking about how much Excel is used to talk to devices connected to a PC and gathering data and/or controlling said device. I would imagine that it is quite small compared with what Excel was designed for.

The only one that I have created so far was a while ago; Excel uses the MSComm Control to talk to a modem on a Com port to send messages to scrolling LED displays around the company. It's crude but it does the job. Just! Sometimes needs must - VB is not available to me and the IT department would not have installed the application without much red tape.

EDIT:It is true that Excel is probably not the best tool for the job here.
