Why is Excel changing my date to a fraction?
Exp: I enter 1/4, it gives me 1/4 instead of Apr-2019; it ignores the date format I chose, MMM-YYYY

Excel Facts

Can a formula spear through sheets?
Use =SUM(January:December!E7) to sum E7 on all of the sheets from January through December
because u put in 1/4 meaning first of april.. if u want apr-2019 put in 4/19 or something

I can't replicate this.
When I format a cell as MMM-YYYY, and type in exactly this
1/4
it displays as
Apr-2019

How are you entering the 1/4 value ?
By typing it in ?
Or pasting it from somewhere else ?
Or maybe by macro ?

I wonder if it's some kind of regional setting ?

When I type
1/4
into an unformated cell, it displays as
01-Apr
and I can see that Excel has assumed I mean 01/04/2019.

Were the cells formatted as Text before you changed the format to MMM-YYYY? and is the 1/4 aligning to the left or the right?

Clean spreadsheet opened, default format is "number", no alignment, just change the format to "date" and input 1/4, 1/6 or 1/8 and the result being fraction

Hmm, the default format should be General on a newly opened sheet with no data.

Can you put in the formula
=ISNUMBER(A2)
changing the A2 to the cell reference of the cell that has the fraction/date and let us know if you get TRUE or FALSE as a result.
