Dear excelers,

I am having trouble trying to create the following chart:

I have frequency data for medications used by participants in a clinical trial (i.e. how many times a particular drug is taken by study participants). The medications are divided into subcategories of drug classes.
For example:

DRUG NAME FREQUENCY CATEGORY
A 6 antihypertensive
B 4 antihypertensive
C 1 antihypertensive

D 2 analgesic
E 1 analgesic

C 8 antidepressant
D 6 antidepressant
and so on...

I would like to generate a single chart displaying a cluster of columns for each category, i.e. antihypertensives first, then analgesics, then antidepressants etc.. I'd like to colour each cluster of columns according to the category/data series.

I managed to get this arrangement using a scatter plot, using a different data series per category, but then the data points are not displayed as columns but as dots.

Using a column plot instead, I get mixed clusters of columns of different drug categories, which is of no use.

Finally, I can work with a single data series and then manually colour the columns by their category, but this is too much manual editing for my taste.

I hope someone can help with this - apologies if I've missed something simple.

BTW to make things more complicated, I'm using Excel 2011 for Mac.

With many thanks,
Christiane.
