What order does Excel calculate formulas--left , right, up , down...

Excel Facts

Which Excel functions can ignore hidden rows?
The SUBTOTAL and AGGREGATE functions ignore hidden rows. AGGREGATE can also exclude error cells and more.
Re: EXCEL CALCULATIONS: what order does it happen, left, ri

an example would clearify your question. Excel does a formula exactly as you type it..

Re: EXCEL CALCULATIONS: what order does it happen, left, ri

I wasn't so much talking about the formula in the cell but the sheet as a whole. I am using these two formulas to get the date from a very large sheet to a small sheet.

The second formula looks at a sheet and return the row numbe for a particular column and the first fomula then looks at that row number and column for the date. So basically the first formula only looks in one place where the second formula is searching the entire range...

=IF(ISNUMBER(AQ17),INDEX(NextDue,AQ17),"")

=MATCH(M$13&CHAR(127)&$G17,ConCat,0)

Re: EXCEL CALCULATIONS: what order does it happen, left, ri

I think the excel calculation algorithm is pretty complicated...mainly dependent on prececedence. But in general assuming all formulas are equal in priority I *believe* it calculates down each column.

Why should this matter?

In your example Excel should prioritise the formulas in the order which the results are needed. i.e. in your example excel should calculate the second formula first as the first formula is dependant upon this result.

Hmmm.
