Excel Auto-Reformatting Dates

My problem is this: I'll cut '21-May-03' from a notepad file and paste into an Excel cell. It will stay in this format (seemly text) as long as I do not try to edit the cell. If I edit the cell, say to '22-May-03', Excel will then automatically reformat the cell contents to date format. The desired effect is for Excel not to change the contents of the cell.

Excel Facts

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
Apply a dd-mmm-yy format to the cells if you want a numeric datevalue; otherwise, format the cell as Text to retain a text value.
