Excel add-on (mac) not processing if window is not active?

I am using the FAME (facebook ads manager for excel) add-on which downloads ad data from the api. It's pretty neat but I've noticed it won't download data unless excel is my active window. This means I have to sit and stare at my screen doing nothing else for the time it takes to download.

Do we know why this is the case? Is excel causing this? Or do we think it's the add-on? Just knowing why it does this would be great.
