I am wondering if I can generate a list or if someone has a comprehensive list of anything that has trouble with backwards compatibility between Excel 2016 and Excel 2010 - any where from a reference library to something like the chart type Treemap.

Excel motto
Not everything I do at work revolves around Excel. Only the fun parts.
Burn 2010! I know that's harsh, but there were many of the tools there that just didn't work or didn't work reliably.
As far as formula-functions go you can check out

The Compatibility Checker does have limited use in that it is more gotcha than watch-out.
There used to be good "What's New" for the versions on Microsoft Support pages, but that appears to have been trashed.
Worse yet, if you send a file to someone using a previous version, they could edit the file resulting in a loss of work or design.

Also Excel 2019 will not be an improvement over Excel2016 distributed to Office 365 subscribers. The best compatibility is provided thru Office365, and as a subscription, is not much of a premium. In the 5-install package, it can be a savings over the pay-once version.
