I am hoping some one can help me with a perplexing problem. I am using Excel 2010.

I have a worksheet with a range of data ... including the header row, there are 16 columns and 251 rows (B8:Q258). I have selected Data / Filter to enable the autofilter arrows in each cell of the header row. Testing the sort / filter capabilities work as I would expect ... no problems. But, the sheet is still unprotected.

As I intend to protect the sheet, I used the Review/All Users to Edit Ranges option to defined the range of cells to allow users to edit ranges as "=$B$8:$Q$258".

Lastly, I protect the sheet with checking boxes ...
  • Select locked cells
  • Select unlocked cells
  • Sort
  • Use AutoFilter

Now that the sheet is protected, in testing the sort functions, I select the down arrow, and then perform a sort (either A to Z or Z to A). The sort finished, but then the workbook freezes. I cannot select anything now. I cannot choose another sheet, select a cell, choose a menu option ... nothing. The only option I can choose is to Close the workbook using the X in the upper right of the window. If I choose to close, then click Cancel in the close window (where I have the option to Save / Don't Save / Cancel), the workbook unfreezes and I can return to the sheet I was on and resume my work. But if I try to do a sort again, same thing happens.

This problem only occurs when doing a sort. If I use the autofilter button to filter for specific entries, there is no problem. Only the sort causing problems.

I have tried to delete all the rows beyond 258 and all the columns beyond Q ... no difference. I removed any COM add-ins. I have deleted all cells that have formulas ... inserting only data elements ... with no joy.

I am at my wits end.

Steve

I replicated your range, and your permissions (as far as I can determine from your description), and the sort worked as expected using Excel 2010
