'Escaping' smiley codes

Does anyone know if it's possible to 'escape' the smiley codes generated by certain character sequences in the forum.

For example, I just responded to someone with a question about Auto._Open(), but if you type that directly without the . it converts it to Auto_Open.
 
You'd need to enclose it in tags - e.g. the inline code ones, or [plain]
