For counting substrings with the COUNTIF function
... in the criteria, you can use wild cards ... e.g. "*ABC*" ... where * can be any length of characters or i think "?" works for single characters but i don't have excel running on linux to check

YES! I love it when I screw up big time on the podcast! Because... it let's me know that people are watching. I've been flooded with e-mails, voicemails, etc from people who pointed out that I completely missed that wildcards work in the FIND and SUMIF functions!!!

I've recorded a few podcasts ahead because I will be in Frisco TX for the bootcamp this week, however, on the next podcast that I record, I will show the better way to solve that problem!
