Envelopes on left side of page

What do the envelopes mean on the left side of the page? Does the sealed envelope mean that the message has been closed? If so, I asked a question and got one response but the response did not help me. So why is it closed (if that's what it means) And what is the meaning of the red envelopes?

It would help if there was a display like the icon next. When you move the cursor over the icon it is described.

Maybe there should be a button next to the button that says 'NewThread'; and call it
'Icon Meanings' and this would link down to the definitions. But you guys do an excellent job with this website. I am always impressed!
