I want to highlight duplicates from range A1:A4 to A6:A9, but not including the duplicates in the same range. For example, only the number 1 should be highlighted, not 2 since it appears in the same range twice, and not in each range only once.

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.
You could use conditional formatting with a formula like =COUNTIF($A$6:$A$9,A1)>0 applied to A1:A4.
If you need to highlight in both ranges, use a similar formula in conditional formatting for the other range.
