Is it possible to create a duplicate query where I can test a field for duplicate data and a new field that gives a running count of the duplication, i.e. the first time a record appears, the new field gives a value of '1', the second time the same record appears, the new field will give a value of '2' and so on.

Excel Can Read to You
Customize Quick Access Toolbar. From All Commands, add Speak Cells or Speak Cells on Enter to QAT. Select cells. Press Speak Cells.
Don't know how to do it the way I think you are asking for it, but there is a way to find how many duplicates you have of a field's value.

Do a summary sort, group by the field you are checking for duplicates, and then add a column in the query that is Count(*). Be sure to put that this column is an Expression (in the Total row).
