I want a cell to calculate a value (in one cell) x rate (in another cell) unless:

I type text or a number directly into the cell. I want to be able to overwrite the cell formula as long as I type something in, but for the formula to come back and apply if I thereafter delete its contents.

Could anyone help me on how to do this?

Lock one reference in a formula
Need 1 part of a formula to always point to the same range? use $ signs: $V$2:$Z$99 will always point to V2:Z99, even after copying
Assuming the cells you want to multiply are B2 & C2 and the cell you want is F2,add this code to the 'code' for the sheet:

Code:
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)

    If Target.Address = "$F$2" Then
        '
        If Target.Value = "" Then
            Target.Formula = "=B2*C2"
        End If

        '
        '
    End If
End Sub
