Don't allow update links

I have a number of spreadsheets that have links to several source data files. I want to be able to turn off the link updates so that a user has to manually choose the actions to make the updates. I know in Tools - Options there is the checkbox to always ask to update links, which is what I have right now. My problem is that the users keep hitting the "update" button by accident or because they don't understand what they are doing so I want to take that option away from them completely. When the users try to update links the entire file errors out and the data disappears.

The majority of users just need to see the data, there are only 1 or 2 owners of the files that are responsible for updating the data. I am spending too much time each month fixing the files because the users keep trying to update.

Any ideas?

Choose Edit|Links and click Startup Prompt. Check 'Don't display the alert and don't update automatic links' and click OK then Close.
