dir list in Windows 2000

As an old user of DOS I would frequently use the "dir" command. I would often redirect the result with this sign ">" .

I want to be able to list all the files in a folder (without icons) and put this list into Microsoft Word or Excel.

This is so needed and so simple? Why has the answer been eluding me for two years?

Thank you very much in advance.

Excel Facts

Test for Multiple Conditions in IF?
Use AND(test, test, test, test) or OR(test, test, test, ...) as the logical_test argument of IF.

Why can't you just use dir > test.txt and then open the text file in Excel/Word?

To do this from Word/Excel would require VBA code.

To get that I would suggest a search on this board.

Dir list

Norie:

Thanks.

I am tryiong to do this from Windows 2000 . I'd rather not go to MS-Dos (which I can do). "Command prompt"

In the folder is a very nice list. But I can't copy it to work with it.

I want to list my files with comments about some for my own hard-copy documentation.

Best,

I am very grateful for your add-in.

I can load the add-in but I can not get it to work.

What do you mean? The addin itself is not working, or you don't know how to work it?
I had to install it just now to take a look at it (I've never actually seen it before), but it's pretty simple.

After you install it and select it from the menubar, you just click "browse" to select the folder you want to index (for example, if you want a list of everything in the My Documents folder, you would click browse, browse to that folder--the file name will read "index_this_folder"--and click Save.

Then just check/uncheck the options as desired, make sure the results will start from the cell you want (default is A1).
Then you just click OK and wait for it to finish running. When it is finished, a list of files and/or subfolders in the selected directory should be on the page.

It is in my list of add-ins. But I do not know how to use an add-in. I go to tools and it is in the list but I can not execute it. If I look at the path it is in some hidden folder.

Thanks

If you are seeing it in the addin list, all you have to do is check the box next to it in the list and press OK. That should "turn on" the addin.

Really, all you need to do is *read* what is written on the page I linked to. It explains all of this.
