I want to calculate a discount for a sale using either a % off or a $ off. For example, I set up a drop down box of available discount codes that correspond to a list of discount percentages or flat dollar value. Of course, when Excel calculates the discount, it doesn't know if I mean a % off or a flat dollar amount. Any tips on a formula to use?

you should be able to use a IF()

How are you showing the & and $, i can not access the share - permission required

does the dropdown have a $ in front or a % at the end
or are you just using a number ???

=IF( Right(cell, 1) ="%",
=IF( Left(cell,1) = "$"

if just a number , how do you know if its a value or % ?
