Designing a simple form

I have a form which accesses data from a table. I want this form to only show those records under category X, where category is a drop-down list.

How do I do this?

My first thought is to have all my data, and then link my "category" to another simple form, which is only a drop down list of the possible choices. In my drop down list though, I keep getting this error that says that a query can't be used as a row source! I don't get what is going on, as the control source needs to be a list of the choices to select (from a table or query), but what do I put in the row source?
