Deletion of posts

I hope that I've found the correct forum for this post (should be because it's called "About This Board")

Posts to this board are often deleted without explanation - particularly if they are perceived to be critical of the actions of moderators

Is this acceptable behaviour?
Would it not be more courteous to provide an explanation when posts are deleted - other than pointing out that there is nowhere to post criticisms.

Ponsy - it depends on the reason behind the deletion/editing.

If a post is blatantly "illegal" - something that should not be posted, then it may well be done without posting first to the topic. The poster may receive a PM explaining why it was done. This will depend on the user - some users have a history of posting threads that "push" what the board will allow.

If a post is questionable, the moderator or admin may decide to post to that thread, or send a PM to the poster, suggesting they be more careful.

All seems a bit subjective to me.

Is it not possible to come up with a more objective set of "rules" relating to deleted posts.

The moderators are in the process of coming up with more defined rules, but it's not an easy task - people need freedom to post (within reason) but we also need to protect the board staff - their every action should not be subject to debate.

by the way, here's a snip from the Terms of Use that everyone who is registered at the board has agreed to:

You agree that you will not post any: (a) abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, threatening, sexually-oriented or any other material that may intimidate or annoy other users or violate any applicable laws; (b) materials that infringe on or misappropriate any patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret or other proprietary rights of any other person; (c) programs or materials that contain viruses or other malicious code, or that may damage the operation of another's computer; or (d) advertisements for goods or services. Doing so may lead to you being immediately and permanently banned (and your service provider being informed). The IP address of all posts is recorded to aid in enforcing these conditions. You agree that the webmaster, administrator and moderators of this forum have the right to remove, edit, move or close any individual posting or any discussion topic at any time should they see fit.
