Does DDE let you link any applications ? For example, if I'm running Excel, could it poll data from any other open application that I am running ? If so, does someone have information on how this is setup, I'd like to mess around with this idea.

DDE is older technology. Most of the financial app's are now gearing towards using RTD (Real Time Data) to stream market data into Excel. If you are just looking to share static info between apps, you would be better off using ODBC or DSNless connection strings. DDE is more for dynamic data like market data for example.
