I'm newer to Power Query and can't figure this error out -- "We cannot apply operator < to types Text and Date."

I've pared this down to the relevant lines. It chokes on the last line.
BD = Excel.CurrentWorkbook(){[Name="from_date"]}[Content]{0}[Column1],
#"Changed Type" = Table.TransformColumnTypes(DATA_TABLE,{{"DY_DAY", type date}}),
#"Filtered Rows2" = Table.SelectRows(#"Filtered Rows", each [DY_DAY] >= " & BD "),

It seems BD is not being treated as a Date? How do I check that?
I've tried passing BD in as text and using Date.FromText.
I've tried passing BD in as a date. Nothing works.
The error itself is confusing because clearly you CAN use > expressions when filtering dates.

The preview window says that BD = 6/1/2021

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
